Chalet Renovation in Megève — A Contemporary Take on Alpine Authenticity
The Astesi Blue interior architecture studio led the complete renovation of this 1970s village chalet in Megève. A project designed to reconcile the charm of mountain living with contemporary standards of comfort and design.
Location: Megève, French Alps, France
Type: Residential — Chalet
Area: m²
Scope: Renovation, interior decoration, bespoke furniture, complete fit-out
Nestled in the heart of Megève, the hometown of Elsa Sibuet, this small 1970s chalet had preserved the charm of alpine architecture but lacked modernity. Its fragmented layout and dated materials made the objective clear: rethink everything while preserving the soul of the property.
The goal was to create a deeply welcoming interior where rustic authenticity and contemporary design could coexist seamlessly. The result is a mountain home that truly reflects the personality of its owners.
The renovation began with a complete reorganization of the chalet’s interior spaces. The kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms were entirely reimagined in terms of layout, circulation, and natural light.
The kitchen was completely redesigned to create a more generous sense of space and improved functionality. The bathroom received particularly careful attention, featuring lace-pattern porcelain stoneware that introduces an unexpected sense of refinement within an alpine setting.
The bedrooms were reconfigured to maximize usable space and enhance privacy, ensuring that each room could function as a comfortable retreat.
For this project, material selection played a central role.
Reclaimed wood, an essential feature of alpine interiors, was chosen for its authenticity and warmth, then contrasted with distinctly contemporary materials: Carrara marble in the kitchen and lace-inspired porcelain stoneware in the bathroom.
In the bedrooms, the studio pushed the exploration of textures even further. One room features wallpaper inspired by pony hide, while another incorporates a crocodile-skin pattern. Two bold design choices handled with subtlety and restraint, bringing character to each room without overwhelming the space.
The overall atmosphere of this intimate chalet now balances the spirit of a mountain refuge with contemporary sophistication—warm, inviting, and meticulously detailed.
In chalet design, there is often a temptation to apply the same mountain aesthetic throughout every room. The result can feel predictable and lacking in personality.
Astesi Blue’s approach is to give each room its own identity through carefully selected materials while maintaining a consistent thread through colour, texture, or design details. This creates interiors that feel layered, memorable, and authentic.
Today, this Megève chalet is almost unrecognizable from its former self.
It has retained its village character, warmth, and alpine roots while embracing a contemporary way of living. Every element of the interior was considered as part of a complete vision—from the flooring and wall coverings to the volumes, materials, and bespoke details.
This commitment to overall coherence lies at the heart of every Astesi Blue project, regardless of location.
